About Three Strings

Created on a cool night on the island of Oahu on 17 September 2008, Three Strings has actually been in the making for several years -- we just didn’t have the time to make it happen (likely excuse? We think so).

So why the long wait? Well, our Web site admin, Richie, is the dude behind the wildly popular (by our own admission) Okinawan pop culture blog, Karakui.com, so you know, he’s kind of busy.

Why should you even bother to bookmark us -- rather, subscribe (you’ll find an RSS Subscribe button on the main tun-tun-ten blog page) to Three Strings? Because we really care about the music of Ryukyu and we have a contributor to the Web site who has been a student of the instrument for 15 years, Takeshi. If that’s not enough to reel you in, know that there aren’t a whole lot of Web sites like this in English: How cuil is it? Talk about blogging, Riccin’s been blogging about Okinawan pop culture for 7 years (started his stint at Donna’s awesome Okinawa.com and Okinawa.ws. I’m not linking to either Web site because they’re no longer under her.)

Tell me, is the staff at Three Strings the same person? We’d love to tell you but it could endanger our salary here -- wait a minute, we aren’t getting paid for this? In that case and for the time being, Richie (aka Riccin, Takeshi) is pulling triple-duty here at Three Strings. If you’re interested in contributing articles to Three Strings (and I must stress that it’s all for love here if you know what I mean but if it’s any consolation, we’ll add your picture to our staff listing above) please email us at threestrings.net@gmail.com.

Made on a Mac? Yup, it’s a prerequisite of every Web site or blog we work on: We gotta mention the Mac. Apple’s iWeb, although far from perfect, is the tool Three Strings is created with. Videos are edited with iMovie and photos are edited in Acorn, iPhoto is used to keep them all in order. GarageBand (although we are looking into Logic Express) is used for our original recordings and iTunes is used to keep everything tagged and organized properly. We love the iPod nano, but more so, we really love the iPhone. We like talking about Macs too but we’ll keep that to a minimum here (i.e. only if it relates to Ryukyu music).

Nifee deebitan (thank you) for reading this far and hope you’ll stay around long enough to enjoy the ride.

Peace. Love. Tun-tun-ten.
